Monte Cassino
The monastery of Monte Cassino is easily reached by car or tour bus, the stop is just outside. World War II saw much bitter fighting here as the Nazis were pushed back. The whole place was bombed to nothing and rebuilt after the war.
The interior is very impressive, while the Crypt is so beautiful.
A keen eye will detect evidence of the fighting still remaining to this day, damage due to shrapnel and the like is common, once you get used to looking....1......2......3........4...
